Narasimha Jayanti is a very important day in Hinduism and is a day dedicated to the worship of Narasimha. Narasimha is half human and half lion, and is the fourth form of the Hindu godhead Vishnu. There are many temples of Narasimha all over India and he is worshipped ardently.
Historical Importance Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to end the tyranny of the demon Hiranyakashipu. Since Narasimha is a great protector, he destroyed Hiranyakashipu to save the world from his endless tortures. Hiranyakashipu believed that he is greater than Vishnu and even tortured many devotees of Vishnu. Narasimha finally put an end to this when Hiranyakashipu tortured his own son Prahlada, who had dedicated his life to the worship of Lord Vishnu. While Hiranyakashipu was torturing Prahlada, Narasimha appeared from a pillar and struck him down. Prahlada was blessed by Lord Vishnu because of his utter devotion towards him. Celebration In all the temples of India, this day is celebrated with vigor, with many devotees fasting till dusk. The sculpture of Narasimha is washed and is paved with many colorful flowers. Devotees believe that praying to Narasimha on this day would give them protection from evil.
