Lord Vishnu is a supreme deity in Hinduism; he is the protector or the savior of the world. Vishnu has taken many incarnations or avatars to cleanse the world of evil and Varaha is one of them. Varaha is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form a human-animal- half boar and half human. Varaha Jayanti is celebrated as the day on which Lord Vishnu took the incarnation as Varaha to save the Earth.
History
According to old scriptures, Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Varaha to salvage the world from the demon Hiranyakasha who was an immortal being. Hiranyakasha tried to destroy the earth by dragging it to the bottom of the sea and demolishing it. Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Varaha and stopped Hiranyakasha from devastating earth while killing him in the process. He restored earth to its original standing by raising it on his tusks.
Celebration
There are many temples dedicated to Varaha in southern India which is why it is mostly celebrated in southern states. Many devotees go these temples to beseech Varaha on this day by chanting prayers to him and also fast for the whole day. They worship the statues of Varaha by washing it with coconut water.
