The story behind the Dhanteras starts from the 16-year-old son of King Hima. His death was predicted by horoscopes. He would die by a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that day, his wife didnt let him sleep. She took all her ornaments and gold and silver coins in a heap and the entrance of the chamber and lit diyas all over the place. And She sang songs and narrated the story to keep her husband awake. Yama, the god of Death arrived at the princes doorstep next day, in the disguise of the serpent. His eyes were dazzled from the shine of jewelry and gold coins. He climbed the heap of gold coin and sat there listening to the stories and songs. Then he silently went away in the morning. It is said that because of the intelligence of his new bride, he was saved from the clutches of death and the day is now celebrated as Dhanteras. The following day is also called as Naraka Chaturdashi and also named as Yamadeepdaan as the ladies of this house light diyas and keep them burning all night to glorify Yama.

The ideal time to perform this puja is the Pradosh Kaal which starts after sunset and stretches till 2 hours 24 minutes.
