Govardhan Puja is celebrated after the day next to Diwali. The festival marks the defeat of Lord Indra to Lord Krishna. At times, Govardhan Puja falls a day later next to Diwali.
According to Hindu mythology, Govardhan Puja is celebrated during Pratipada Tithi of Kartik. Hence the day of Govardhan Puja is decided by the beginning of Pratipada tithi whoch may lead to delay in a day of celebration.
In some states, Govardhan Puja is celebrated by the name of Annakut Puja. "Anna" means food. Lord Krishna is offered with food and sweets makde up of "Anna" which includes rice, wheat barley and other cereals.
The state of Maharashtra celebrates this day by the name of Bali Pratipada or Padva. The day Marks the victory of Lord Vamana, avatar of Lord Vishnu over Bali and hence throwing Bali to Patal Lok. It is believed that on this day, Bali visit prithvi lok or earth from patal lok or known as "hell"
If we talk about celebration the Gujarati New year falls a day after the date of Govardhan Puja celebration. It is generally celebrated on Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Kartik.
