Who is saint Kabir Das?
Saint Kabir was a spiritual, Guru and a mystical man from India, Born during the 14th and 15th Century at Banaras or Varanasi India. The details of his birth are not found, but it is known for sure that he was, given birth by a Hindu Mother, and he was found abandoned on the Ghats of Ganga River at Varanasi. He was then adopted by a local Muslim weaver and his wife. And named him as Kabir The great one. He is a religious saint, who is credited to bring harmony among various other religions and their practise. He was the disciple of another saint named Ramanand and was the devotee of Lord Ram. The teachings of Saint Kabir include the study of religious texts of the Sikhs- the Guru Granth Sahib. He also influenced the various religious movements that were taking place during that time in India. One such movement was the Bhakti Movement that stressed on the worship of the formless God also known as the Nirgun Bhagwan, who does not adhere to any meaningless rituals.
Life Story of Saint Kabir:
As mentioned above Saint Kabir was born in the year 1398 and believed to live a 120 years of life. He believed and gave emphasis on the unity and oneness of God and practises that surrounds the Supreme Being. Even though he belonged to a Muslim Family, he got his formal education from a Hindu saint. This is an example of his idea of bringing together of two opposing religions together. At the time of Saint Kabir, India was on crossroads facing religious turmoils, and society was at an intersection where meaningless rituals were being practised by all religious and the innocent were being swayed and mislead in the name of religion.
Kabir the Peoples poet and Saint:
Unlike the saints and ascetics at his time or the medieval era, who practised untouchability, Saint Kabir was rather a peoples poet and saint. He would go in public like in Bazaars and village Chaupal to address his concern and also listen to others. He was affected by the then prevalent miseries. And he was so ahead of his times, that in instructed all the humans in the world to live in harmony, and because of his work he is still remembered and revered even 600 years after his death. His style of writing was simple, yet it had deep rooted philosophy and meaning and valuable implication of life. He used vernacular Hindi to write his dohas or two liner couplets.
Claim of Kabir by different Sects:
Kabir was a Spiritual Guru and was equally followed by different sects. Muslims claimed, since he had a Muslim upbringing so his enunciation in Sufi tradition became an impetus. He was a celibate and an ascetic in nature, so he is claimed by all saints that he was unmarried. Those of tantric origin and traditions claims that his Dohas and couplets are of Kundalini practices or his songs represents the Kundalini traditions. The Sikhs claimed that the tradition and practice of Kabir was based on the tuning in to the sounds of within. Hindus claim that he is a devote Hindu because of his birth by a Hindu lady; he gained his wisdom from a Hindu saint. One thing was common in all the sects that Kabir was self- serving and was a peoples person.
Kabirs work:
His style of writing was simple, yet it had deep rooted philosophy and meaning and valuable implication of life. He used vernacular Hindi to write his dohas or two liner couplets. Kabir speaks to his audience directly and in an uninhibited tone, that shakes you up even from your deepest slumber. His poems and philosophies are the embodiment of day to day life. It may not be a work of art, a way of teaching about consciousness of self.
Kabir Das Jayanti:
Saint Kabir Das was born in the month of Jyestha Purnima. Hence the Kabir Das Jayanti or Birthday anniversary is celebrated by his followers on the Purnima of May or June. On Kabir Jayanti elaborate celebrations are held at his birthplace. Religious sermons are held at the Kabirchaura Matt. It becomes a place where religious and spiritual Gurus preach the teachings of Kabir to common.
