The name , Gadadhar Chattopadhyay (a.k.a. Ramakrishna Paramhans) doesnt ring a bell, but this is the real name of the most famous and revered saint of 19th Century- Ramakrishna Paramhans. He was born on the 18th February 1836, in a devout Brahmin Family, in West Bengal.
He became a priest at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple in Kolkata. His Spiritual counterpart and his consort, Sardamoni (Sarda Ma/ Sharda Ma) was also a mystic like him and is revered as a saint. The conversion of complex spiritual theories, and contexts about religion were rather made easy by him. He was a mystic and a simple yogi. He was of the belief that there is a divine embodiment/ or a re incarnation of divine in every individual.
For some of his followers, he is said to be a modern day reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was a live example rather than a personification of spiritual salvation, to the troubled souls from all walks of life. During his time, Bengal was under a shift of Ideologies, because of rise of Brahmanism and the Advent of Christianity. He held the flag of Hinduism during this time in reviving the religion.
Although, he took his last breath in the year 1886, but his teachings and way of thought were still survived by his disciples. One of the most famous disciples was Swami Vivekand; he established Ramakrishna Mission and Belur Math. A credit is given to Ramakrishna Paramhans is that his teachings are ancient like sages and serene, yet they can be adopted in the modern and contemporary thought as well.
Swami Vivekanda, who was his disciple, opened the Ramakrishna Mission, which carries out the charitable work all over India. According to the Hindu Lunar Calender, it was dwitya Phalgun, Shukla Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1892, when Ramakrishna was born. His teachings advocated One God One religion. As mentioned earlier he was a priest at the Dakshineshwar Temple. Where he use to perform the Shodashi puja, where Sharda Devi was made to sit in the seat of Goddess Kali, and was worshiped as divine mother. Ramakrishna regarded Sarda as Divine mother in person. He referred her as Devi Maa, and by this name she came to0 be known buy all of his disciples.
