Our Vedas have specifically emphasised that worshipping Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati brings marital happiness into one's life. Lord Shiva, is upheld as a wanderer who likes to stay away from worldly pleasures. As he is always immersed in Sadhana or deep meditation. In Rudra's form, he had turned everything into ashes during the pralaya or annihilation processes on Earth. Although, It was only to pave way for the beginning of a new world. He was pulled out of his ascetic life by Mata Sati and then by Ma Parvati. Lord Shiva first married mata Sati, and her love & respect for Lord Shiva were so deep that she could not tolerate her father's impudence towards him. Lord Shiva went back to his isolated abode after Mata Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire. And as Sati was a part of Ma Shakti, everyone requested Goddess Shakti to bring back Shiva from the self-alienation state inflicted by him. She agreed and took birth as ‘Parvati’ daughter of the Himavan, the king of the mountain. As described in Valmiki Ramayana
“From Mena, this Ganga is emerged as an elder daughter to Himavanta, and a second daughter, by her name she is Uma, is also begotten by Himavanta, oh, Raghava.”
“And that Uma who is unified with her rigorous sacrament thus became reverential to all the worlds, and that best one among mountains, Himavanta, gave such a daughter to Rudra, an unequalled one in his aspect.” Uma is another name for Ma Parvati. She is also the Mula Shakti of Lord Shivas.
Thus once again, Lord shiva was brought back to the samsara world (the material world) by Ma Parvati. And their unified force blesses marital happiness to all life partners. Together they are also worshipped as Ardhnareshwar. It is the consolidated form of masculine Shiva and feminine Parvati.
In a way, it teaches every couple that the two aspects of life: Man and Woman, must blend into each other equally to achieve everlasting love in married life. Shiva and Shakti or Shiva and Parvati are depicted as Purusha and Prakriti in our ancient text. Which means the source of creation and nature. The Creation evolves into life in nature, similar to the life process on earth. Thus, the beautiful portrayal of Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati explains ‘the importance of love, the uniqueness of the man & woman character and mutual respect in a relationship. Anyone who takes care of this very essence of a man and woman alliance, ‘respectfully and rightfully attains ultimate ecstasy in married life or relationship. The Vedic text Manusmriti also describes the importance of a happy relationship in marriage.
“In a family where both the wife and husband are extremely happy
and pleased in the company of each other, there is always
prosperity and welfare in that household.”
The Atharva Veda incorporates various aspects of everyday life events including marriage. It has mentioned in detail about the happy marital life. Some of them are:
- “Hard work and strength should be the traits of a husband, and a wife should be calm and serene. Which will result in a brave and sensible progeny.”
- “Husband and wife should be completely devoid of anger and work together to accomplish household tasks.”
- “Compatibility should never be an issue between a husband and a wife. Love comes with understanding.”
Thus, Atharva Veda shows us that “The husband and wife must have faith, understanding and trust in each other. The wife should always be respectful towards her husband. The husband too should be caring and loving towards his wife so that the bond between them becomes stronger and they enjoy a happy and satisfied married life.”
The ancient text teaches; ‘the prosperity and happiness of the family require an effort from both the partners. And performing Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati puja augments the love and respect in married life. Gradually it overshadows all the conflicts and enhances the mutual admiration, devotion, and bliss required for a happy family life. And you realise the importance of looking for happiness within rather than the outside world.
