In an interview in Madras in 1897, Swamiji said, “...now the people themselves must try to reform the society, improve it, etc. So we have to wait until people become educated and realize their own shortcomings, and are ready and able to solve their own problems. ... The new way is to improve ourselves by ourselves.”
