Married Women observe a full day fast on this day from sunrise to moonrise. Women start arranging for the festival few days before it starts. Markets get equipped with stuff for women such as bangles, red saree or suits, cosmetics, jewellery, henna (mehendi), karwa lamps, decorated pooja thalis, pooja items, etc. Women do not eat or drink even a single drop of water, they busy themselves in preparing mouth-watering dishes for the night and socialize with another women sharing the joy and love for their husbands. There is a ritual of sargi on this day, the mother-in-law of the married woman prepare something to eat for them and before the sun rise, all the women of the house take bath and relish the meal prepared by their mother-in-law. The upcoming day, they observe fast and by the evening, all the ladies get ready in the finest of sarees or lehenga along with matching jewellery with their hands beautifully painted with henna. The ladies then hear the story of Karwa Chauth which may differ from region to region and exchange pooja thalis while singing Karwa Chauth song. The ladies then wait for the moon to rise along with their husband. When the moon rises, ladies see the moon through sieve once and then their husband. They break their fast by drinking water from their husband's hands and then they together relish food.

There is a traditional story related with this festival which states that a young woman, who broke her fast before moon rise, found her husband dead the same instant. Desolate and depressed, the woman prayed to Goddess Parvati to resurrect her husband to life. She was instructed to observe fast for seven karwa Chauth's, after which her husband came back to life. Thus it is considered really important to observe this fast for the well-being of husband and marital bliss
