Bhimsen Ekadaashi or the Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha in the Jyeshta month Origin of Nirjala Ekaadashi Vrat Pandav Bhim Ekadashi origin is associated with Bhima. Bhima was the second Pandava brother out of the four Pandava brothers, who are Yudhisthira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva.
This fast was always observed by Kunti, mother of the Pandavas and Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas. But Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers never kept the fast. And this was because he could not control his huge appetite as he was a voracious eater. Instead of keeping fast he was ready to pray and give charity and observe all other rules. But then he always had a guilt feeling for being unable to observe this fast. So, on one of the occasions, Bhim chose to observe the vrat but then he also wanted to eat at the same time, which was not possible.
Therefore, he went out to Ved Vyasa, the grandfather of the Pandavas. Since eating and fasting was not possible simultaneously, sage Vyasa suggested Bhim that he should observe the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat. It is after bhim started observing this Vrat that the Vrat gained its name as Bhimsen Ekadaashi Vrat. The Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat is the strictest fast amongst all the Ekadashi in the Hindu religion. This is so as one cannot even drink water while observing it.
The literal meaning of Nirjala is without water and therefore all the Vishnu devotees who keep this fast do not drink neither water nor eat any food during the entire day of fasting.
This fast is considered of huge significance as it is believed that this fast is equivalent to going on a pilgrimage. It is also believed that observing this Ekadaasi is equal to observing all the 24 Ekadaasi. At sunrise in the morning the vrat begins and ends on the next days sunrise.
