About Ram Navami

On the nineth day (Navami) in the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Chaitra is Ram Navami. And Lord Rama is the 7th incarnation of the Dashavatara of Lord Vishnu. The most important celebrationon this day takes place at Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), Bhadrachalam (Andhra Pradesh) and Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu). At several places, there are Rathyatras carried out which are also known as the Shobha Yatras of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. The devotees also celebrate this day by doing the Lord Ram Puja.

How it is celebrated

On the first day of Chaitra, which is the Gudi Padwa, celebration of Ram Navami starts and it continues for 9 days. During this period, devotees keep fats, chant mantras, sing bhajans and praise the exploits of Lord Rama along with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Ramnavami procession is another special attraction of the Ramnavami. There is a beautifully decorated chariot and four persons are dressed up as Lord Rama, His wife Sita, His brother Lakshmana and His Disciple Hanuman. Apart from these four, there are also several other persons dressed up in ancient costumes as Lord Rama's soldiers. The procession is a happy and joyful affair and the participants shout praises of Rama's reign

Moreover, during Ram Navami some of the devotees fast on this day. The fasting devotee can eat potatoes made in any form. But it should not include haldi (turmeric powder), garlic, ginger or onion. The fasting devotee can also eat fruit and root vegetables of any kind. Curd, tea, coffee, milk, and water are some of the other foods which the fasting person can eat.

Bhajans are sung by the devotees and this bhajans praises the works and adventures of Lord Rama, his brother Lakshman and his wife Sita. The houses are swept clean and people pray before the pictures of Lord Rama, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman. Incense sticks, flowers etc are kept before the deities and there are two thalis to perform for the puja. One of the thali contains the prasad and the other thali contains the items necessary for the Puja like roli, aipun, rice, water, flowers, a bell and a conch.

After the puja is done, the youngest female member of the family applies teeka on the forehead of all the male members of the family and a red bindi on the foreheads of all the female members of the family. All the members of the family take part in the puja which starts with the sprinkling of water, roli, and aipun on the Gods. After this handful of rice are showered on the deities. Finally everybody stands up to perform the artiand Ganga jal or plain water is sprinkled over the gathering as the Arti ends. And during this entire pujabhajans are sung with utmost devotion. And as the puja ends prasad is distributed amongst all the people who have gathered for worship.
