Mahalya Paksha is said to last for 15 days and Tritya Shraddha is the third day of the same. People who dies on the Tadiya or Tritiya tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month or the third day of the waning moon phase of the Bhadrapada month are said to be offered Shraddha known as tritiya Shradda. The Shraddha follows the process of offering tarpans to the deceased and pind daan is carried out. Pind daan is given to the cows as food or can also be immersed in the river.

It is advisable to perform Lord Vishnu pooja with the help of a pundit on this day to bring peace, love and harmony in homes and as well as among relatives and well-wishers.

Gaya, Kashi/Varanasi, Rameshwaram, haridwar, Prayag Sangam/Allahabad and Rishikesh are the popular places to carry out Tritiya Shraddha rituals. The ideal place for this shraddha according to Tamil beliefs is the Sarva Mangala Theertham in thiru Rameshwaram near Mannargudi. Shraddha should be carried out in the day time so that the lunch time should take place around 1-2 pm.
