The entire east goes crazy over Durga puja. From the seventh to the tenth day people in eastern India celebrate durga puja with huge enthusiasm. And on the tenth day the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed in the water. People come in large procession to immerse the idol. Moreover, people dance on their way to the immersion and devotional songs are also played throughout. Although the festival is celebrated universally, yet the regional flavors get attached with the celebration. Here special mention can be made of Garba dance of Gujarat, Ramlila of Varanasi, Dusshera of Mysore and Durga Puja of West Bengal.

Origin of Navratri and Vijayadashami

There are different stories that tell us the origin of Navratris. And these stories vary from region to region. In north India the story runs that Goddess Durga was created as a divine female warrior by the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Goddess Durga was created to end the atrocities of Mahishasura, who was harassing and killing the innocent people in quest to win over the three lokas. Mahishasura fell in love with Goddess Durga?s beauty and wished to marry her. But the Goddess set forth a condition that Mahishasura will have to win over a battle with the Goddess to marry her. Although Mahishasura agreed to fight, yet he never knew that he would be defeated at the hands of the Goddess. The battle continued for nine nights and on the end of 9th night, Goddess Durga beheaded Mahishasura. These nine nights came to be known as Navratri. And the tenth day is celebrated as the Vijaya Dashami, the triumph of good over the evil.

The other story related to the origin of Navrati?s is connected with Ramayana. Here it is said that Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga in nine aspects and for nine days in order to gather and gain strength and power so that He could kill Ravana. These nine nights came to be known as Navratri and on the 10th day i.e. on Vijayadashami, there was the win of good (Lord Rama) over the evil (Ravana). Thus, Vijaya Dashami is the festival of joy and happiness that unites people from all the sections of the society.
