Long ago, there was a Maharishi named Maharishi Kat. His son, born under the clan of Katya was named as Katyayan. Rishi Katyayan was the devotee of Goddess Durga and worshipped to please her. Being pleased by the devotion, Katyayan wished that she takes the birth of hisdaughter in the next birth.Goddess Durgaaccepted his wish. After sometime when the powers or "Prakop" of Mahishasur crossed its limits, all the deitiesBrahma, Vishnu and Mahesh prayed Goddess Durga to end the evil of Mahishasur. She took the responsibility on her shoulder and ended his Prakop. She is called Katyayini as she is the daughter of Rishi Katya.
