Tulsidas Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Goswami Tulsidas, who was a great Hindu saint and poet. He is also an acclaimed author of the great Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas Prashnavali. Tulsidas Jayanti is observed on the Saptami (7th day) of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of moon) during the month of Shravana in the traditional Hindu calendar. For those following the Gregorian calendar, this date falls in the month of August. Ramayana was written originally by Valmiki in Sanskrit and understanding it was only within the reach of scholars. However, when Tulsidass Ramcharitmanas came into existence, the greatness of the famous epic was popularized among the masses. It was written in Awadhi, which is a dialect of Hindi. The day of Tulsidas Jayanti is therefore dedicated in honor of this great poet and his work.  

Significance of Tulsidas Jayanti

Tulsidas was one of the highly admired and knowledgeable poets of his times. Besides rendering incredible pieces of work he was also a saintly figure who was known for his good deeds. Moreover, his life was noted for various miracles, one of which incorporates his meeting with Lord Hanuman and that was followed by divine darshan of Lord Ram. It is a popular belief that Saint Tulsidas was helped by Lord Hanuman while composing Ramcharitmanas. Some of the people even consider him to be an avatar of Sage Valmiki. The Ramcharitmanas written by Tulsidas gives more emphasis on Bhakti towards the Supreme Being. Out of the twelve outstanding works of Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas was the most famous.

Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated with utmost joys and enthusiasm in his birthplace Rajapur and many places in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. In remembrance of this great saint, Tulsidas Jayanti gives every Hindu devotee a chance to express their gratitude towards the writer who popularised Ramayana around the world. Various recitals of Ramcharitmanas are held in temples of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ram on this day. Several symposiums and seminars are also held based on Tulsidas teachings. Many devotees feed the Brahmins on this day as well.

On the auspicious day of his Jayanti, a fast is kept, charities are done. Ramcharitmanas is read and recited, Brahmins are fed, and Lord Ram, along with his consort Sita and devotee Hanuman, is worshipped with great religious fervor. In literary and social circles, discussions, lectures, seminars, and symposiums are organized on his teachings, life, and works. The devotees visit temples of Lord Ram and Hanuman on Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti. The Ramcharit Manas is read with pious feeling on this day.
